A Day at the Beach… ala Sugar

A Day at the Beach Cuppycakes!

Here’s a question for ya: can we call it a guest blogger if I’m shamelessly stealing someone else’s hard work and brilliant photography without any sort of payment?  I’m gonna go with yeah.  So… this week – please welcome our guest blogger… Miss WendyLynn! This week, she’s bakin’ up a killer-cute batch of beachy cupcakes.  They use all easy-to-find candy decor (like my fave cupcake cookbook, Hello, Cupcake) and she’s so nice she’ll even let you have some *to go* if you’re a tired party pooper leaving before dessert!

To save time for decorating (and life things like *getting a job* eek!) Wend used a good ol’ vanilla cake mix to whip up 48 cupcakes (2 boxes worth of goodness).

Wend created these as adorable individual beach scenes… but if you wanted you could create a unified scene with some all blue and some all grahamy cupcakes, with teddies distributed in adorable ways throughout.  The possibilities of cute deliciousness are endless!  Here’s she’s frosted the part she wants to collect graham crumbs.  You might not want to frost all then dip all, simply because dried frosting is less than sticky…

After her beach was stuck, it was time to pump in the water!  She simply tinted a can of Duncan Hines blue and flopped it on there with a knife – easy peasy!

For towels she used old fashioned salt water taffy rolls and a pizza cutter:

Layout your scene however floats your boat (pun intended):

Bears can be in the water, on the sand, on inner tubes or even diving!  Bear heaven!

So you’re in right?  Because if you left us hangin’ at the beach alone, well, it’d be sad.  So do it up!

  • Cupcake recipe of choice
  • gummy lifesavers (for inner tubes)
  • gum balls (for beach balls)
  • teddy grahams for bears (can also use gummy bears)
  • old fashioned saltwater taffy (cut taffy with a pizza cutter for “towels” after rolling out if necessary) – you can use any gummy like candy here – like fruit rollups!)
  • frosting of choice (half white, half tinted blue)

  1. Make cupcakes (surely you’re a pro @ this by now based on my pounding it into your heads…)
  2. Frost 1/2 of the cupcake with white frosting, dip into graham cracker crumbs
  3. Frost the other 1/2 blue
  4. Cut taffy with a pizza cutter for “towels” (roll out if not already)*

*make sure to create RIGHT BEFORE serving, I had bad luck as far as taffy melting and teddys getting soggy.
